Akhil Maheshwari, MD, is a neonatologist, professor, and NEC researcher. He is a professor and Endowed Chair at the College of Medicine Pediatrics, Morsani College of Medicine, University of South Florida. His research focus includes the mechanisms of inflammatory gut injury in neonatal necrotizing enterocolities. Specific areas of interest include macrophage function, leukocyte trafficking, tight junctions, and cytokines. He has authored or co-authored numerous book chapters, and original manuscripts, holds provisional patents for novel anti-inflammatory agents, and is editor of a textbook of Neonatal Hematology, Immunology, and Infectious Disease. He received his medical degree from Banaras Hindu University Institute of Medicine and has been in practice for 22 years. His other activities include managing a fellowship program, a laboratory and serving on editorial boards for professional journals. His involvement in the working group at this time is as an ad hoc expert.
