Why some babies get NEC while others do not is not known, but preemies are most likely impacted because they have an immature immune system. However, there are things we can do to decrease NEC from occurring and include:
- Swabbing the inside cheeks of the baby with colostrum after the baby is born
- Feeding human milk to babies
- Limiting the length of time babies are given antibiotics
- Following feeding protocols
- Communicating and including parents in the care process
- Using tools that help recognize signs and symptoms of NEC
